Mark Holden’s Gracing Airport Bookstore Sale Bins With An ‘Idol’ Memoir

When the ‘Idol‘ TV show format was first carved into stone tablets tens of thousands of years ago by early man, it was written that the judges would follow a Goldilocks-style construction: one judge who’s too mean, one judge who’s too nice, and one judge who’s just kinda middle-of-the-road and boring. For Australia, the first incarnation of that judge archetype was the effusively inoffensive Mark Holden.
While Marcia Hines and Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson spewed forth waves of compassion and crankypants vitriol respectively, Mark was a wildcard – it was impossible to tell whether he’d give forth a mild compliment, mild criticism or his signature catchphrase, “Touchdown!“. Amazing stuff.
Holden left the show in after the fifth season but apparently had the forethought to keep a record of all the shenanigans, tomfoolery, hooliganry and general goings-on in the seasons leading up to his departure, which he’s decided to share with the public in the form of a tell-all memoir.
My Idol Years‘ purports to be a “startlingly honest, unique portrait” of his time involved in the monstrous behemoth that is pop music reality TV, as well as his life before and after.
If you’ve desperately wanted to read anecdotes from Mark Holden about Elton John, David Hasselhoff, and that time Mark dressed as a fucked up clown for ‘Dancing With The Stars‘ (see below), then this is the book for you.

The book will hit shelves in May with an RRP of around $30.
