Margot Robbie Started A Secret Right-Wing Twitter To Research Fox News Film ‘Bombshell’

I sometimes wonder if famous people have secret social media accounts for interacting with everyday folks – if Keanu Reeves is out there running a successful meme page, or The Veronicas are sounding off in the comments of a Daily Telegraph article. It definitely happens, and Margot Robbie is one celebrity who seems to have pulled it off.

The Aussie actress appears in the upcoming Bombshell, about the Fox News sexual harassment scandal. She plays a fictional character named Kayla, a “chirpy conservative news junkie” who lives and breathes all things Fox. To get into the right mindset for the role, she turned to Twitter and created a fake account, where she followed as many young, right-wing women as she could find.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Margot Robbie said:

“I didn’t grow up watching Fox News, and I didn’t grow up in the same place as [Kayla] … I was struggling to understand that point of view for a while, and Twitter ended up being the most useful tool, because people are extremely vocal on Twitter.”

That’s putting it very mildly.

Many of the characters in the film are based on real people – Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron play former Fox News identities Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly. Robbie’s character Kayla is an composite of various different women who accused Roger Ailes (played by John Lithgow) of sexual harassment.

“Kayla is an amalgamation of many women’s stories, and some of the specifics you see in scenes with her are taken from real-life interactions those women experienced,” she said.

Bombshell will be in Australian cinemas on January 16.
