Marcia Hines Mistook Ian Chappell For Tony Greig, Everyone Facepalmed

Man, Americans really don’t know a damned thing about cricket, do they? Marcia Hines was in Sydney over the weekend to sing a surprisingly moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner prior to each of the historic Major League Baseball games between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks at a radically transformed Sydney Cricket Ground. The broadcasts, beamed live around the world on the MLB Network, played off of the novelty of staging a baseball game in a cricket stadium, and featured American commentators feebly trying to explain how cricket works (spoiler alert: they have no idea). So to help them out, they enlisted the help of an Australian cricketing legend and tenured broadcaster. Marcia Hines bumped into this national treasure and snapped a photo with him, uploading it to Twitter.

The only problem is that’s actually Ian Chappell, former Australian captain, and mainstay of Channel 9’s summer of cricket programming. It’s a common mistake to make, sure. And it’s easily cleared up when both parties identify themselves to sort out the confusion. Well, they would, except for the fact that Tony Greig unfortunately passed December 2012, and thus he’s a little hard to get hold of these days. As a result, Twitter had one of its trademark meltdowns over the situation.

However the story has a somewhat happy ending, with Marcia apologising and receiving kind words from Tony Greig’s son, Mark.

With the runaway success of Major League Baseball’s venture into Australia, Marcia seems to have precious little time to readjust her “Dead/Alive” checklist before other American spectacles invade the country. Just think: NFL at the MCG, the Kentucky Derby at Randwick, or even NASCAR at Bathurst. Though for that last one, drivers might need a quick crash course in how to turn right.
