Brand-New Crime Podcast ‘Maddie’ Tackles One Of The World’s Biggest Unsolved Cases

Maddie McCann

Crime podcasts are like catnip to a huge part of the general population. It’s fascinating to discover a lesser-known mystery through a true crime podcast, with series like Up And Vanished and Serial doing that well. But there’s something so exciting when a poddy series is announced that takes on one of the big hitters, and new series Maddie — which explores the disappearance of Madeleine McCann — is doing just that.

On May 3, 2007, the then three-year-old disappeared from her bedroom in the resort town of Praia da Luz, Portugal. The cute blonde daughter of two British doctors, Gerry and Kate McCann, who were dining at a nearby tapas bar at the time she vanished, had her face and case splashed over global headlines and public interest in the Maddie McCann case hasn’t really wavered in the 12 years since it happened.

There’s just so many theories, ranging from those that believe Maddie McCann was abducted as part of a pedophile ring operating in Europe at the time, that she wandered out of her room and got hit by a car, and allegations that her parents had something to do with it.

The new podcast, produced by Nine, is the result of two years of painstaking research into the complex case and features interviews from many people involved with the case — including cops, DNA scientists, crime scene pathologists and private detectives who worked for the McCanns — that span seven countries.

It boggles my mind, because I am the co-host of PEDESTRIAN.TV‘s own true crime podcast, All Aussie Mystery Hour, and to me “painstaking research” means anything that take more than two hours to put together.

Maddie will be a multi-episode podcast aimed at untangling this truly puzzling case. You can find episodes HERE or on iTunes and Spotify.

And if you’re a little too obsessed with the Maddie McCann case and everything true crime, why not come see myself and my All Aussie Mystery Hour co-host Melissa Mason chatting all things crimey at PEDESTRIAN’s Selfish Weekend, a festival running on March 16 and 17 dedicated to all things ~self care~? You can grab your tickets right HERE.
