‘Lilo & Stitch’ Is Copping A Live-Action Remake For Some Godforsaken Reason

Because Hollywood simply refuses to stop, Lilo & Stitch is apparently now the next beloved animated property in line for an inexplicable live-action remake, according to reports.

The Hollywood Reporter is, well, reporting that Disney has earmarked the hugely popular 2002 animated feature film for a remake that will be a blend of live-action and CGI, presumably because shaving down a particularly large-eared cat and poking it until it growled on command for film would be considered mildly inhumane.

Up-and-coming writer Mike Van Waes has already been tapped to pen the script for Disney, while producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are helming the project. Those two names aren’t unfamiliar to live-action remakes either, with the producing duo currently working on the much-talked about live-action remake of Aladdin for Disney as well.

The original Lilo & Stitch raked in a reasonably impressive US273.1million at the box office off a budget of US$80million, spawning a string of straight-to-video sequels and a hefty merchandise range, which goes a little way to explaining why Disney is suddenly keen to make a real-life Hawaiian girl dance with a CGI alien on big screens around the globe.

There’s no word just yet on who will star in the live-action remake or who will direct it, and it’s expected that any potential film will not hit cinemas until well after the Guy Ritchie-directed Aladdin hits cinemas next year sometime.

Still, if there’s one thing you should be taking away from this article, it’s that Lilo & Stitch live-action is happening. You can’t stop it. It’s coming one way or another.
