Laura Dern Saying “Pew” As She Fired Her Laser Made It Into ‘The Last Jedi’

Whether it’s a stormtrooper accidentally smacking their noggin on a doorway or one of your lead actresses making the noise she assumes a prop gun should make when fired during an actual take, it appears shit is always going to slip through the cracks in your movie even if it has the biggest budget in the world.

Despite the almost ethereal grace and dignity with which the incredible Laura Dern carries herself, apparently she’s not immune to whatever laser-lust inspires us to say ‘pew’ upon pretending to fire a laser.

As Rian Johnson remarks in the newly released director’s commentary for The Last Jedi, Dern’s insistence on doing so was so strong that it might it into the final movie and is quite visible on rewatch, as demonstrated in this handy GIF of Vice Admiral Holdo emerging from a smoke cloud to stun Poe:

There’s an apocryphal story about Ewan McGregor pulling something similar on the set of The Phantom Menace, apparently unable to stop himself from making whooshing lightsaber noises as he practised his space swordsmanship. What a champ.
