Moby’s Story About Dating A Pre-Fame Lana Del Rey Is A Hectic Ride

Lana Del Rey, Moby

Earlier today, Moby apologised to Natalie Portman over claims he made about dating her in his newly-published memoir Then It Fell Apart. It’s not the only bizarre relationship story in the book, though, as elsewhere, the musician recalls a date with a pre-fame Lana Del Rey.

The pair met at a bar in New York when she was still going by the name Lizzy Grant, and she agreed to go out on a date with him:

“We’d kissed at the bar at 4 a.m., just as the place was closing, and I’d asked her to come home with me. She’d smiled and said no, she wouldn’t go home with me after just meeting me, but she would happily go on a date if I called her and asked her out. I called her the next day, and we talked for thirty minutes about music and politics and growing up in the suburbs.”

The two eventually went on a date to a vegan restaurant, in around 2006. When he found out that the future Lana Del Rey was a musician, he invited her back to his new apartment to play him some music. While he tried to show the place off, she was unimpressed:

“Sure, do you have a piano?”

“Yes, back on the second floor,” I said.

“Floors in an apartment.” She shook her head. “Moby you know you’re the man.”

“Ha, thanks,” I said.

“No, not like that. You’re a rich WASP from Connecticut and you live in a five-level penthouse. You’re ‘The Man.’ As in, ‘stick it to The Man.’ As in the person they guillotine in the revolution.”

I didn’t know if she was insulting me but I decided to take it as a compliment.

He goes on to claim that they kiss at the bench of his piano but she ended things there, and he walked her to the elevators and said good night. Lizzy Grant later worked as a backing singer for him, although today, obviously, she is Lana Del Rey, so she’s doing just fine.
