Keira Knightley’s Big Dumb Hat In ‘Love Actually’ Was There To Hide A Pimple

Keira Knightley had such bad acne during filming for Love Actually that she wore a cap for a pivotal scene – you remember the one, where she shows up to Andrew Lincoln‘s house to demand to see footage from her wedding.

She was actually 17 years old when she filmed the feelgood flick, so you know, pimples, they’re just a part of your pubescent life. They’re just something you have to deal with at at that age, like unrequited crushes, binge drinking in parks, and fretting about your final year results. Normal teenage stuff.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 last week, Knightley admitted the cap had nothing to do with her character, and everything to do with the big ol’ zit on her forehead.

This is the problem with being 17 and being in films. It was humongous, so there was no choice but to find a hat to cover it – because there was no lighting or makeup that was going to cover it.

Love Actually came out back in 2003 – yeah, 15 long years ago – but still Knightley remembers the feeling of waking up before shooting with a new friend on her face.

It’s funny how you just remember extreme embarrassment.

I remember coming in in the morning, being like, [gasps] ‘Oh wow, I’ve got another head on my head. What are we going to do? There’s nothing we can do about this.’

But there is, because you can always put a hat over it. I was actually very grateful for that hat. I have a lifetime of gratitude for that hat.

Girl’s gotta remember who was there for her from the beginning – the hat she wore in Love Actually.
