Katy Perry Says Her Album Bombing Gave Her “Situational Depression”

Embattled pop icon Katy Perry has given a candid interview to Vogue Australia ahead of the arrival of her world tour, in which she describes dealing with “bouts of situational depression” after her 2017 album Witness flopped.

Perry’s in fine faux-mystic form in this admittedly pretty weird interview, telling the author (and close personal KatyCat friend) Derek Blasberg about how her week at Californiapersonal growth retreat” the Hoffman Institute really turned things around for her, complete with awkward computer metaphors:

I believe that, essentially and metaphorically, we are all computers, and sometimes we adopt these viruses via our parents or via the nurture that we are given or not given growing up.

But far be it from us to pooh-pooh someone’s spiritual rejuvenation, which certainly seems to be what Perry’s undergone in the wake of her disappointing album release.

I was ready to let go of anything that was holding me back from being my ultimate self. I have had bouts of situational depression and my heart was broken last year because, unknowingly, I put so much validity in the reaction of the public, and the public didn’t react in the way I had expected to … which broke my heart. […] That brokenness, plus me opening up to a greater, higher power and reconnecting with divinity, gave me a wholeness I never had. It gave me a new foundation. It’s not just a material foundation: it’s a soul foundation.

Don’t really know what any of that means but good for her! It’s gotta be rough going from a tie-breaker with Michael Jackson for the most #1 hits off a single album to the crickets from the general public in response to Witness (the interview charitably calls it a “career plateau”).

Nevertheless, she appears to be extremely back on her weird aunt bullshit (or perhaps she was never off it?), and we congratulate her on getting through that monumental disappointment and coming out with a Papal visit and a hot celebrity boyfriend under her belt (Orlando Bloom, what’s up baby).
