Kath & Kim To Make Big Screen Debut

Jane Turner and Gina Riley’s iconic mother-daughter duo Kath & Kim are set to make their cinematic debut when Kath & Kimderella hits screens later this year on September 6th.

Shot in Melbourne and Italy, the movie follows on from where four seasons of the Logie and AFI winning series and a telemovie left off, with the titular characters and an ensemble cast including Glenn Robbins, Peter Rowsthorn and recent news headliner Magda Szubanksi returning as Kel, Brett and Sharon respectively for a holiday to Italy described as “a vajazzling tale of love, lust and revolution.”

I have really fond memories of the foxy ladies from Fountain Lakes, memories that were slightly tarnished by the series final attempts at a resurgence after it moved from the ABC to Channel 7, made all the worse with the international franchising of the show to the States. There’s no doubting its pulling power with both a nostalgic public and with the potential line-up of actors and comedians whose endless cameos made the show’s mockery of Australian popular culture all the more pointed. However, whether the premise can be sustained for another film – which so far sounds like Eat, Spray Tan, Love – and if Turner and Riley can come up with something really noice, different and unusual (sorry) remains to be seen. I’d love to be proven wrong.
