Justin Bieber Said His First Year Of Marriage Was ‘Really Tough’ Due To Trust Issues

Justin Bieber has opened up about his marriage to Hailey Bieber, née Baldwin, to GQ, revealing the first year of their marriage was “really tough”, because of his past struggles and behaviour.

Justin covered the May 2021 issue of GQ, taking the opportunity to talk about everything from his faith to his marriage, plus moving on from his speckled past. The singer called it “redemption”.

Justin and Hailey originally married in September 2018, in an intimate ceremony in a New York courthouse. The couple tied the knot around two months after they publicly announced their engagement on social media, following a holiday in the Bahamas.

For their second, more fancy-schmancy wedding, the Biebers married in front of their family and friends in a sunset ceremony in South Carolina. The second wedding gave us all those lush black and white wedding portraits. You know what I’m talking about.

Justin told GQ that he’d always felt “compelled” to marry.

“I just felt like that was my calling. Just to get married and have babies and that whole thing,” he said, although babies will happen eventually, rather than any time soon.

“The first year of our marriage was really tough,” Justin shared, because there was a lot of residual trauma from his past.

“There was just lack of trust. There was all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with, because it’s scary,” he said.

“You don’t want to scare them off by saying, ‘I’m scared.’”

Justin said he spent the first year of his marriage walking “on eggshells”, but eventually, he started to believe in it.

“We’re just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories,” he said.

“And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to. Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life.”

Before marrying Hailey, Justin said his home life was “unstable”.

“I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that,” he said.
