John Oliver’s Flaying Of The Postal Vote Just Won An LGBTQI Media Award

Other than being really funny and entertaining TV, John Oliver‘s quite excellent Last Week Tonight does an incredibly good job of handling complex and often sensitive subject material; often times doing so with a finely balanced sense of humour and humility.

Case in point, an episode that aired last October touched on the key points of the Marriage Equality postal vote that the Coalition Government forced LGBTQI Australians to endure, outlying just how ridiculous and hopeless the whole situation was, shining light on some of the truly awful and harmful voices that were given a platform because of it, and ripping the whole thing a new one with hilarious aplomb.

It’s not “officially” online, but here’s a sneaky look at it thanks to some unknown YouTube user.

Despite the segment clocking in at only a few minutes long – and being aired in support of the main segment for the episodes which was on America’s National Flood Insurance Program – it landed hard enough to score the entire episode a GLAAD Award, handed out at the 29th GLAAD Awards ceremony in New York earlier today (local AUS time).

The awards seek to recognise and acknowledge media that broadcasts outstanding and accurate representations of the the LGBTQI community, and the issues that affects their lives.

The Last Week Tonight episode, which aired on October 29th last year, took out this year’s GLAAD Award for Outstanding Talk Show Episode, beating out nominations from shows like The Ellen DeGeneres ShowThe Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and The View.

Among the other winners from today’s ceremony – which followed on from one in Los Angeles back in April – were Halsey, who picked up an award for Outstanding Music Artist, Billboardfor Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage, and Anderson Cooper for his coverage of the Pulse Nightclub massacre on CNN.

So there you go. A segment highlighting the Tasmanian DJ who headbutted Tony Abbott is now an international award-winner.

Get around ’em.
