John Mulaney, 38, has checked himself into rehab for the treatment of alcohol and cocaine addiction issues.

According to an exclusive from Page Six, the Saturday Night Live writer and veteran comedian checked into a Pennsylvania rehab facility on the weekend for 60 days, after experiencing a relapse.

“He’s on board with his recovery, he’s not fighting against rehab,” a source told Page Six.

In a 2019 interview with Esquire, Mulaney first opened up about his battles with alcohol and drug addiction from a very young age. In to the interview, Mulaney said he started drinking alcohol at 13, and battled addiction throughout this 20s.

“I drank for attention,” he told Esquire. “I was really outgoing, and then at twelve, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.”

“I never liked smoking pot. Then I tried cocaine, and I loved it,” he continued. “I wasn’t a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of, ‘This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing. Who’s the athlete now?’”

According to the interview, Mulaney first quit his addiction at age 23 in 2005, without ever going to rehab.

“I went on a bender that weekend that was just, like, fading in and out of a movie,” he told Esquire.

“It was just crazy. A weekend that was… I’m never going to tell you. That’s mine. I didn’t kill anyone or assault anyone. But yeah, I was like, ‘You’re fucking out of control.’ And I thought to myself, ‘I don’t like this guy anymore. I’m not rooting for him.’”

John Mulaney joined the Late Night with Seth Meyers team in mid-November, telling Jimmy Kimmel in an interview that working with Seth helped him find structure after lockdown negatively affected his mental health.

“I really needed a job. I like having a boss and having assignments to do,” Mulaney said.

“When I’m in charge of something… not so much the best thing. I wanted to have a boss, I wanted to have structure.”
