John Cho Is All About The Unexpectedly Woke #StarringJohnCho Campaign

Congrats, Twitter. In the past couple of days, the subjects of two hashtag campaigns calling for diversity in the entertainment industry have recognised your valiant efforts, and have even thrown their clout behind your online activism.

Coinciding with Gillian Anderson’s A++ response to the calls for a female #NextBond, actor John Cho has come out in support of the similar #StarringJohnCho, where some deadset Photoshop pros have reimagined blockbuster posters with *gasp* an Asian-American lead:

The reason: well, why shouldn’t we get to see more PoC inhabiting leading roles?

Cho feels the same way. Speaking to Yahoo!7, the actor said the whole push “was kind of silly, but then people really did have that discussion, and it did get people thinking about it.

I felt like it was me on the poster but it wasn’t really about me. I really dig it.”
He elaborated on how the push pertains to Asian-Americans, saying “preconceived notions and stereotypes of Asians is something people don’t think about or recognise.

It’s a similar attitude towards women. There’s so much chauvinism in the world and patriarchal viewpoints but it’s so embedded in our culture that people don’t even realise.

That’s what the hash tag is highlighting, like, ‘Are you aware this is happening?’”
While seeing the bloke replace Matt Damon in The Martian is probs not gonna happen, his appearance in the Star Trek flicks is notable: that often-goofy piece of sci-fi telly was a groundbreaker too, being the first show to feature an interracial kiss.
What’s more is that Harold And Kumar, of all movies, has become somewhat of a nexus for these discussions on diversity. Kal Penn – no fooling – ascended to Barack Obama’s staff as a liaison for Asian-American groups.

Not bad at all, lads.
