Last year, the war obsessed duo behind The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, tentatively settled on a lead for their serendipitously timed Osama assassination flick, Kill Bin Laden. Aussie Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Animal Kingdom) was to headline as one of a team of Navy Seals who embark on an assassination mission shortly after 9/11 but due to an offer to star in the 300 prequel, Edgerton never signed on.
In light of Bin Laden’s unexpected death, the project was further delayed when Boal was forced to change the script (which originally depicted the mission as unsuccessful) to a new version which ended with Bin Laden’s death.
Now it seems Edgerton is back on again with Variety reporting that both parties have reached a formal agreement with the script reaching completion and Edgerton declining the 300 role.
We really hope he gets to pull the trigger.
Edgerton is currently filming The Great Gatsby.
