Joel Edgerton Considered For Bourne Legacy Lead

As its 2012 release date approaches, Universal have taken active steps toward finding Matt Damon’s successor in Bourne trilogy spinoff, The Bourne Legacy. Intimidating combat boots to fill but as one of the 2000’s most commercially successful action franchises, the Legacy lead represents one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. And mad bank/exposure, too. One of the many reasons we’re glad Joel Edgerton is among the names considered.

Deadline reports: “The field is narrowing, and I’m told that the following are set so far to test: Joel Edgerton (The Thing), Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) and Luke Evans (The Amateur American). There could be another name or two (Logan Marshall-Green comes up as speculation), but that’s who’ll test first week of April.”

We like Edgerton’s chances. He’s familiar with stunts, has experience in big budget franchises (Stars Wars Episodes I and II) and can do the taut internal conflict thing too (Animal Kingdom). Plus he’s way more rugged than the other potentials which must surely count for something? Finally, a Worthington-style coup we can endorse.

The Bourne Legacy is slated for release August 3, 2012.
