The First Peek At Joaquin Phoenix’s Very Different Joker Has Finally Arrived

The accelerating rate of superhero movie reboots and rebrands means the DC cinematic universe will probably have a new Joker by next week. For now, though, Joaquin Phoenix is the next dude to don the facepaint – or not, judging by the first photo of him in character.

Todd Phillips, the director of the as-yet unnamed Joker film, shared an initial sneak peek at Phoenix as Batman‘s arch nemesis on Instagram. Devoid of scars, purple suits, and clown makeup, Phoenix’s take on the character looks more like Chigurh from No Country For Old Men.

He has a name to suit the drab green get-up, too. Arthur.

The film has been billed as a standalone origin story for the most famous villain in comic book history. Speaking about his involvement with the project, Phoenix told Collider that “It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f**king s**t out of me or something.”

Expect the film to arrive in cinemas next year.
