Vera Wang and Jeremy Scott are just two of the designers contributing to Barbie’s 50th Birthday celebrations for 2009. Mattel – the creators of the iconic plastic fashionista – will be launching a designer clothing brand (including designs from both Vera Wang and Jeremy Scott) complete with a cosmetics range and a catwalk show at New York Fashion week.
Each item in the collection has been inspired by Barbs herself, who was originally born Barbara Millicent Roberts in March 1959, and will be unveiled in February 2009 as part of the celebratory activities in New York. Barbie’s identity has been altered a number of times throughout the years (think Malibu Barbie, Workout/Sports Barbie, Trailer Trash Barbie) so it will be interesting to see which persona’s they portray.
Wang is creating a wedding gown for the special birthday collection – one version for real women and a mini-version for Barbie – while Scott has designed a high-end capsule wardrobe. I know what I want for Christmas.
