Yet another sponsor has withdrawn from the Kyle & Jackie O Show, this time it’s weight loss company Jenny Craig, adding to the pile of major advertisers to have bailed on the Austereo network following Kyle Sandilands’ much-publicised on air rant.
It seemed strange that Jenny Craig would continue its support of the show, particularly considering Sandilands’ fat-bashing in his verbal attack of news.com.au writer Alison Stephenson. He referred to her as “some fat slag” and “a fat bitter thing” – not the kind of messages you’d think would be endorsed by a company whose whole ethos is providing that extra support and motivation [dieters] need. Nevertheless Jenny decided to sponsor the show – for 24 hours.
A day after announcing its sponsorship of the show, Jenny Craig backpeddled on its support after a blast of backlash from angry consumers.
Jenny Craig released a statement openly admitting that they had “badly misjudged public perception of Kyle Sandilands.” They said: “We feel sorry we have offended so many people, underestimated the sentiment against Kyle and are clearly upset that we made such a mistake. We have instructed 2DAY FM that our advertising is to be discontinued on the Kyle & Jackie O show, and the rest of their schedule immediately.”
How could they have possibly underestimated the sentiment against Kyle?!?
