We Asked Jason Dohring, AKA The Snacc BF On ‘Veronica Mars’, For Intel On The Show’s Future

Australia was recently graced by the presence of iconic television actor Jason Dohring, AKA Veronica Mars’ absolute snacc of a boyfriend.

It seemed fitting that Dohring, who played Logan in all three seasons of the OG series along with the film and revival, was chosen as the cast member to head Down Under to represent the show at Comic-Con considering he and the beach go together like salt with caramel.

I mean…

hiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I chatted to Jason about his character’s tragic fate, his TV ‘rents Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin and the potential of a The Originals reboot.

Oh, and is it too late to mention there are Veronica Mars spoilers ahead? Ah well, your own fault for not jumping on the new season quick smart, anyway.

Were you dying to step back into Logan’s shoes?

To be honest, I enjoyed him as sort of the sarcastic guy which I feel was never lost but when you add to it the most current storyline, he’s sort of a support and a catalyst for Veronica to evaluate if she’s achieving everything she wants.

It’s always fun to play that character who flys off the handle but to play the romantic side of things is also fantastic.

What had you missed most about working on Veronica Mars?

I appreciate the writing and the friends that I have that are the cast.

It’s always cool to come back and do something as creative and as good quality as this show. It’s super special to have a bunch of young actors who have always cared about doing good work.

And the quality of writing is just awesome. I’m really proud that they’ve been able to keep the quality so high throughout all the iterations of the show and I think the fans appreciate that, as do I.

What was your reaction like as you were reading through the script?

You mean, as far as the ending?

Well, yes. How did you react to your fate?

Rob Thomas (series creator) was so cool, he called me before any contracts or scripts were written and just laid out the whole story to me.

It was so cool that he did that.

I was a bit bummed, for sure, but he laid out the reasoning why: We were teenagers on the show so he wanted to get away from the teen drama element and put Veronica in the underdog position ‘coz he felt she worked best in that way.

And that really helped me understand the intention there. It couldn’t have been dealt with more graciously by Rob.

In TV world they always say, “Never say never,” and while it certainly did look like your character bit the dust, have you dreamt up a way of coming back in a potential future season or movie? Maybe Logan faked his death or something?

I guess the writers would have a better idea of how that would happen, if it does.

I’d love to be part of any Rob shows. I’ve done several shows for him now and the writing’s always consistently fantastic. He always keeps the quality nice and high.

I recently re-watched the series and I’m ashamed to say that I totally forgot my queen Lisa Rinna and her hubby Harry Hamlin play your parents! What was it like working with them?

It was really cool. They were so lovely. I remember Harry Hamlin was telling me about all these various alternative energy things that he was working on and I found that very fascinating.

I really appreciate Harry being able to accommodate our schedule ‘coz I know he had a lot of other things he was working on but he was also very kind to provide his input on the show.

And I remember they came to the Kickstarter movie premiere and I have this picture that’s very cool, it has my TV parents and my real parents.

My dad was a big fan of L.A. Law so that was really cool, we treasure that photo.

bless

They’re just fantastic in real life.

Speaking of real life, have you happened to catch an episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills?

I haven’t but I’ve heard that they’re fantastic on the show and I think that’s so cool.

They were always just so sweet to me.

I can’t end this interview without asking about your other series with a huge cult following: The Originals. What do you miss most about the show?

Man, I can’t say enough about how professional the cast was.

Joseph Morgan, Danny (Gillies), all of those guys, they just cared a lot about the show and making it good and when you work in that kind of environment, it’s contagious.  It makes you want to follow that lead.

Again, it was a young cast that just really put their foot down and said, “This is the quality we need to put out every week.” I saw that and appreciated that they could hold down that kind of standard on the show, it just really makes you come to play.

The Originals was, of course, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries but if there happened to be another spin-off, would you ever want to come back for it?

I mean, I don’t know if I’d come back as another character but that wasn’t the first time I’d done a vampire show myself so I know what it’s like to drink that syrup and do a lot of night shoots and stuff like that.

Plus those guys are awesome. I’ve seen Jason since then, he even directed an episode which was really awesome. He’s just such a great guy. A good dude.

Veronica Mars seasons 1 – 3, the revival season and the Kickstarter film are all streaming on Stan.
