In The Next Room, or The Vibrator Play

If you were a woman, having an orgasm in the late 19th century was about as easy as screwing in a lightbulb. That’s a joke, because electricity had just been invented, you guys. Using this bizarre fact as a launchpad, renowned playwright Sarah Ruhl presents In The Next Room, which conveniently details what it’s like to be a doctor’s wife an an era when dominant discourses around sexuality are completely flipping out. Nominated for both the Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize, this play was a massive hit when it opened on Broadway in 2009. Don’t miss it, it has a limited run for STC. (You can probably leave your little friend at home.)
