Never one to shy away from big-budget franchises (The Matrix, Lord Of The Rings, Transformers) or graphic novel adaptations (V For Vendetta), Marvel Studios have today announced that Hugo Weaving will play Red Skull, Captain America’s Nazi arch-nemesis in the forthcoming Captain America: The First Avenger big screen adaptation.
We don’t know if they get any badder than Agent Smith or Megatron but a “former Nazi general officer and confidant of Adolf Hitler” who is considered one of the “greatest threats to humanity” sounds pretty Machiavellian to us. Captain America: The First Avenger will commence production soon and shoot for a July 22, 2011 release date.
