Hugh Jackman Is Well Aware Of How Much The First Wolverine Film Sucked

Proving once again that Australians are the most self-aware people in Hollywood (see Sam Worthington’s sobering appraisal of his acting in Clash of the Titans), Hugh Jackman has admitted publicly to just how much the first Wolverine movie sucked.

The actor admitted this week that the negative critical reaction to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine was completely justified. “I had something to prove, and we could have done better,” he told EW. “Somehow the first ‘Wolverine’ movie ended up looking like the fourth ‘X-Men’ – just with different characters. I left unsure if we’d achieved our goal, which was to make sure people understood my character.”

“This movie will really get to his core,” he added. “So fingers crossed that we’ve done it this time. I’m pretty confident we have.”

He echoed those fears in a recent interview with Fairfax where he admitted that “for whatever reason, there were a number of things working against us at the time with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

“We all put our heart and soul into it. I just honestly – when I watched
it – I went: I still don’t feel like we’ve really delivered who my
vision of who this character is, and the fans vision as well,”
he said. “So I’m
thrilled we’ve got another shot at it.”

The claws are out Shots fired.

The apparently less sucky Wolverine is directed by James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted, Walk The Line, 3:10 to Yuma) from a script by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont.

“The Wolverine” his cinemas July 26.
