RIP Homer Simpson, Killed By A Falling Piano Live On Stage At The 2019 Emmys

It doesn’t have an official host this year, but the 2019 Emmy Awards didn’t waste any time finding a way to make headlines, thanks largely to an opening montage that featured what appeared to be the brutal and merciless death of Homer Simpson.

The animated icon strode onto the stage as the curtain rose on the 2019 awards ceremony, introducing proceedings to a packed Microsoft Theatre crowd of industry heads in downtown Los Angeles, before his life was apparently cut short by a falling piano.

We’re not kidding either. The man walked out onto the stage, a piano fell on his head, and then he disappeared somewhere beneath the surface of the stage.

You have to assume he’s dead, right? That’s not survivable. That’s a dead person underneath that Emmys stage right now.

And sure, you might think that he has animation world physics on his side which would ordinarily mean he could live through any kind of horrible physical trauma. But consider this: He stepped into the human realm, human rules apply, you have to assume his animation debuffs don’t work on a stage not made out of ink and animation cels.

The opening montage quickly continued with Anthony Anderson leaping up from the crowd to keep the show moving while emergency services, presumably, attended to Homer.

But by anyone’s estimation, “killing a TV legend” is a horrific way to start an Emmy Awards ceremony.

RIP dear Homer. We hardly knew ye.
