HOLY MOTHER OF MERYL: ‘Mamma Mia’ 2 Is Officially Coming Next Year

There are two types of people in this world – those who like jukebox musicals where Meryl Streep cavorts whimsically around the Greek Islands singing ABBA songs, and those those who do not.

If you are the first type, then we have some good news for you, dancing queen: ten years after the first one, Mamma Mia is officially getting a sequel, and the original cast are “in talks” to return.

Yes, this is the second time in two days that we’ve deployed this exact GIF, but it’s STILL HIGHLY RELEVANT, dammit.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, it’s likely that Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth will return. There is no mention of Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgard, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters or Dominic Cooper as yet, but watch this space.
The movie, which is called Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (because of course it is), will be both a sequel and prequel to the 2008 original, with sequences set both in the present day and in the past.
The scenes in the past will reportedly feature new cast members playing younger versions of the three leads, and singing ABBA songs that were not included on the first movie’s soundtrack.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is pencilled in for release on July 20, 2018.
