Here’s What To Expect From Seinfeld’s Aussie Tour Based On His Recent Work

Jerry Seinfeld is heading to Australia for a standup tour next year, and to be honest, it’s not entirely clear why.

Sure, we’re obviously all about the 90s’ most iconic whinger, and we’re stoked to be in his sardonic presence, but the fella isn’t exactly strapped for cash.

Nor does he really need to branch out far to find an audience. For the past year, Seinfeld has been supplementing shows around the US with a once-a-month residency at the Beacon Theater in his home town of New York City.

Regardless, he is coming here, and it’s fun to ponder what he’ll be bringing after nearly two decades away.

If you’re remotely familiar with the man’s style, you’ll know the bloke has drawn his greatest inspiration from the niggling shit in life that we all experience, but may not have the ability to directly call out. Reviews of those Beacon gigs confirm that’s still the case.
The Hollywood Reporter picked up on him straight-up saying “what else is annoying in the world besides everything?” and that “spontaneity doesn’t enter into the equation” during his bits.

Rolling Stone noted Seinfeld’s last spot on David Letterman’s Late Night featured material he’s been using for 30 years with only minor adjustments, and that the man still “transmogrifies the little things that bother him with language, rendering them recognizable and fantastical at once.”

After a Canadian show in June, the Montreal Gazette wrote “he follows that same [Seinfeld] formula in his standup now. He avoids commentary on life’s heavy-duty issues… He riffs on life’s minutiae.”
Here’s a spot he did on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show just before taking up his NYC residency, to give you a further feel for the grounded material he’s been working with:
Basically, don’t come to his shows for some avant-garde spectacle, or late-career deviation from the norm. Besides, we’ve got Eric Andre for that. Expect the man to cast his withering gaze upon everything you may have missed, and then prepare to laugh your guts out at his innate disapproval.
If you’ll allow us to wildly guess at what else Seinfeld could get up to in Australia, an episode of his utterly bingeable web-series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee wouldn’t go astray. Hear us out, but we’re thinking Jim Jefferies, a souped-up Maloo, and a sneaky run to Gloria Jean’s would be a vital cross-cultural experience.
Outside of that, we’re hoping a visit to some of our nation’s finest apiarists will stoke the Bee Movie fire deep within his soul. Someone oughta whip him up a hamper with some yellow gum honey and assorted goodies, because the world dearly needs a follow-up to that deeply baffling film – and he’s definitely teased it in the recent past.

He’ll be rocking up for that string of arena dates in August next year, and you’ll be able to nab your pass via Ticketek from November 14. Here’s hoping he has an epiphany on that long-awaited CGI sequel when he’s here, too.
