Here’s What Crash Bandicoot Almost Looked Like In The 90s

Crash Bandicoot was a helluva game – but it almost wasn’t. Probably.

Retired video game producer David Ray Seller uploaded an early test animation for the game to YouTube yesterday, which is what the game ~almost~ looked like before Sony picked it up and pushed their 3D agenda.

“There are many close to the development of the original game that do not even know that this material even existed,” he said. He’s held this thing close – converting it from VHS to digital five years ago, burning it to a back up DVD, then sitting on it.

Y’all ready for this? Here we go, mates – grab your nearest console and hold it close.

Miller, who says he decided to release it because his fans wondered why he was omitted from Crash Bandicoot history, says the animation was scrapped once Sony came on board.

“It was probably too ambitious in nature and was also trying to be humorous. It was never used or even embedded in the game as a hidden “easter egg” treat.”

Here’s what Crash ended up looking like:

The test is from a loftier, more ambitious time, when the folks behind Crash not only had hopes for a TV show, but – if things went well – a Crash Bandicoot amusement ride at Universal Studios.

“The discussion at Universal at the time was if the game was successful (before Sony came a knockin’) then this animation was a somewhat prototype to further flesh out ideas for a possible cartoon series and inclusion into the game.

“A Crash Bandicoot attraction was also discussed, as our offices were right next door to where Universal Theme parks maintained a creative office to plan new park attractions.”

….a Crash Bandicoot attraction….

SIGH.
