HBO Greenlights 3 More Seasons Of Game Of Thrones, “Open” To A Prequel

BRACE. YOURSELVES.

After five seasons absolutely knocking it out of the park, and forever embedding new meaning into the TV fantasy genre—and the term HBO itself—’Game Of Thrones’ has been officially renewed for at least three more seasons, bringing us up to a potential series end in Season 8.

This is why we can have nice things.

Seven seasons for ‘Game Of Thrones’ has long been expected as the show’s lifespan – anything beyond that could err on jumping the shark, especially so if George RR Martin writes the forthcoming A Dream Of Spring at a pace to rival the cruelly drawn-out Winds of Winter. Not that HBO has issues with doing their own thing, tbh.

HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo confirmed the news, according to Entertainment Weekly

“Seven-seasons-and-out has never been the [internal] conversation,” Lombardo said. “The question is: How much beyond seven are we going to do?

“Obviously we’re shooting six now, hopefully discussing seven. [Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are] feel like there’s two more years after six. I would always love for them to change their minds, but that’s what we’re looking at right now.”

Interestingly, however, Lombardo definitely did not rule a prequel to Game Of Thrones’ current timeline. Lombardo said he was “open to anything” in terms of Thrones, saying the final call would be made by David Benioff, Dan Weiss and George R R Martin.

“It really would depend fully on what they wanted to do. I think you’re right, there’s enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel, if George and Dan and David decide they want to tackle that. At this point, all the focus is on the next few years of the show. We haven’t had any conversations about that at this point.”
