Don’t Panic, But HBO Just Greenlit A Prequel Set 1000 Years Before ‘GoT’

game of thrones prequel

As you may know and dread, the next season of Game of Thrones will be the series’ last. I know. It’s upsetting. Take a moment to grieve.

And now take a moment to get cautiously excited again, because GoT‘s network HBO have just announced an unnamed prequel created and written by George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman, set millennia before the events depicted in Game of Thrones. You know, all that stuff that Old Nan couldn’t shut up about to her captive audience of a recently-maimed Bran.

Here’s the official description from HBO:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

Okay, I am excited now.

Some of the events that this prequel will presumably be getting stuck into have been referenced in GoT already – think the Long Night, which supposedly lasted a generation, and obviously those dastardly White Walkers, who appear to have been around for a helluva time – but honestly who cares, I’m stoked just to know that Martin’s gonna keep fiddling around in this world he’s built for our entertainment.

There are another four prequel projects reportedly in the works, and this particular one could air as early as 2020, so the future post-GoT is looking incrementally brighter. What is dead may never die.
