Harry Potter Beats Dark Knight And LOTR To Claim New Australian Box Office Record

Seeing as IT ALL ENDS and you know who dies and Ron and Hermione finally have vampire sex press their mouths together, it surprises no one that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (review here) is the new owner of Australia’s all time opening day box office record. The final Potter installment took a record breaking $A7.02 million in its first 24 hours of release, besting previous record holder Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King ($5.3m) and standing alongside The Half Blood Prince ($4.4m), The Order of the Phoenix ($4.1m) and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 ($4.04m) as Potter films in Australia’s top ten box office openings of all time.

But the records don’t end there. The film netted $A157.75 million in domestic receipts this past weekend, good enough to beak the previous weekend box office record million held by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight ($A148.2m).

“After a decade of Harry Potter films, the final film is truly a cultural event, and we’re thrilled to see this powerful response from such a broad range of moviegoers,” said Roadshow Films managing director Joel Pearlman. “These incredible results are a testament to the incredible achievement of the filmmakers, cast, and, of course, J.K. Rowling, and should ensure the film series’ place in history for years to come,”
