Capping off what’s been a fairly meteoric rise into the global eye, Tasmania’s own Hannah Gadsby is once again being recognised amongst the cream of Hollywood’s crop after scoring a nomination for a prestigious Peabody Award over the weekend.

Gadsby picked up the nomination in the Entertainment category for the Netflix version of her universally acclaimed and hugely beloved special Nanette, which took her from the brink of retiring from comedy altogether to a virtually unprecedented global platform.
The Peabody Awards were established in 1940 and aim to recognise “excellence on its own terms” across a swathe of various artistic disciplines, most notably including documentary, news, radio, and podcasting.
Recent winners in the Entertainment category have included the likes of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Better Call Saul, Atlanta, Veep, Fargo, Black Mirror, and Game of Thrones.
If successful, Nanette would be just the second stand-up comedy special to be recognised by the Awards, following on from Hasan Minhaj‘s win for Homecoming King in 2018.
Minhaj is again nominated in the Entertainment category this year, picking up a nod for his Netflix series Patriot Act.
Other nominees in the category this year include Atypical, Barry, Killing Eve, My Brilliant Friend, Pose, Random Acts of Flyness, The Americans, The Good Place, and This Close.
It’s important to note that Peabody Awards are handed out to multiple entries in each category, so Gadsby doesn’t necessarily have to best every single other nominee in the category in order to win. Though given the year Nanette has had it would not be even remotely shocking if it went ahead and did that anyway.
The 2019 Peabody Awards winners will be recognised at a formal ceremony scheduled for May 18th in New York City.
