‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Director Makes Dead-Serious $100k Bet With Fan

Two years ago, Guardians Of The Galaxy stormed the box office by sheer force of Chris Pratt‘s roguish charisma, and though we all saw it, director James Gunn insists that there’s at least one key detail we were all too dumb to notice.

During interview in 2014, Gunn spoke about an ‘Easter egg’ (some kind of reference or call-back to another source) that he embedded deep within the layers of the film, challenging hardcore Marvel fans to try and tease it out.
“There’s definitely one really big thing that people haven’t seen, but they may never see it – we’ll see,” he said.
Since then, internet sleuths have uncovered numerous hidden in-jokes and references in the film – some of which are seen in the video below – however, Gunn insists that nobody’s hit upon the big one yet.
In a recent Facebook Q&A session with the director, a fan named Tanin Moores called bullshit on the whole enterprise, saying that Gunn refuses to reveal his hidden secret because it doesn’t actually exist, calling him “the ultimate troll.”
Gunn himself then responded, and raised the stakes, promising to give the fan a big fat stack of cash if there really isn’t any big secret lurking in Guardians. He told the fan:

“If there is no Easter egg I will give you a hundred thousand dollars – copy this post – I will consider it a legally binding contract – signed, James Gunn.”
That’s a pretty weird contract, in that it doesn’t specify a time that the supposed ‘Easter egg’ needs to be uncovered, and because ‘Easter egg’ itself is such a broad, vague term it could literally be any bloody thing.
Still though, we eagerly await the outcome of all this, to see whether or not old mate attempts to collect his $100k at some point.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is out next year, and hey, the press tour for that film would be a pretty good time for James Gunn to drum up some publicity by revealing his big secret, wouldn’t it?
Meantime, here are some of the other references and callbacks you may or may not have picked up from the first film:
