Grab Yer Wands M8s, ‘Harry Potter & The Cursed Child’ Is Comin’ To Australia

Wonderful news this morning if you are infatuated with the magical adventures of a certain boy wizard, but also happen to live in AustraliaHarry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming Down Under.

But you can put your robe back in the cupboard for now. The record-breaking production is making its way to Melbourne in 2019, so we’ve still got a little while to go. The play has only been staged in London, and will open on New York‘s Broadway in April 2018.

Here’s the plot rundown straight from the horse’s mouth, if you’re a mad fan but didn’t buy the hardcover stageplay for some reason:

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

It’ll be staged at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, and the promoters have taken great pains to point out that it is exclusively in Melbourne. As many theatre tragics know, many blockbuster international productions which have claimed to be exclusively in Melbourne have eventually trudged their way up to Sydney later down the track. But if that does happen, it won’t be for a while, so get in there.

“When we embarked on this journey, it was an objective to ensure we could get the production to Australia as soon as logistically possible,” say producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender.

“You can’t ever assume a new play is going to have a further life, but we knew that if Harry Potter and the Cursed Child did have a life beyond London and Broadway, that the next stop would be here.”
