Celebs Are Bringing Activists As Their Dates To Today’s Golden Globes

In extremely excellent news, actresses walking the red carpet at today’s Golden Globes will be accompanied by activists for women’s rights and racial equality, including Tarana Burke, who founded the #metoo movement.

Emma Stone, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, Emma Watson, Shailene Woodley and Amy Poehler are all getting involved, which they say was inspired by the #TimesUp campaign.

Emma Stone will bring former pro tennis player and activist Billie Jean King, who she obviously portrayed in Battle of the Sexes. King founded the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Women’s Tennis Association, and has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her efforts.

Susan Sarandon will bring Rosa Clemente, an organiser, political commentator and journalist who campaigns for media justice and voter engagement among youth of colour. She’s also one of the leading voices for Puerto Rico to become an independent nation.

Meryl Streep will bring Ai-jen Poo, the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and co-director of the Caring Across Generations Campaign.

Michelle Williams will bring Burke, the founder of #metoo and a woman who has campaigned for gender and racial justice for decades.

Laura Dern will bring Mónica Ramírez, and attorney and advocate dedicated to ending violence against women, particularly against farmworkers, Latina and immigrant women.

Emma Watson will being Marai Larasi, the executive director of the UK-based black-feminist network organisation Imkaan, as well as being the co-chair of the End Violence Against Women Coalition.

Shailene Woodley will bring Calina Lawrence, a member of the Suquamish Tribe and advocate for Native Treaty Rights, using her music and activism to address racial injustice, police brutality, mass-incarceration, gentrification, violence against women and children, misrepresentation of Native Americans in education and mainstream media, climate injustice, blood quantum, foster youth, and suicide prevention.

Amy Poehler will bring Saru Jayaraman, the president of the Restaurant Opportunities Centres United and ROC Action, which fights to improve wages and working conditions for restaurant industry workers.

It’s an almost certainty that all of these women will be wearing black, an initiative organised by the Time’s Up campaign to stand in solidarity with those who experience sexual harassment, assault or abuse across all industries.
