Girl Geek Academy Are Gonna Teach Young Gals How To Be Badass Gamers

I don’t know about you but it’s school holidays in Victoria right now which means moody teenagers… everywhere. If you’re a parent, sibling, aunt, uncle – an adult-in-charge-of-a-small-person then gather round, because here’s something a girl might just love.

Girl Geek Academy – the global academy teaching young punters how to smash a coupla keys – is launching their first Girl Geek Games pop up at the Melbourne Arcade for 13 to 17-year-olds keen to find out just what the heck’s so good about Overwatch.

Overwatch – the massive game that saw a 17-year-old given a $188,000 contract to play professionally… and his mum had to (gleefully) sign the contract.

It goes without saying that the gaming world is just a tad male dominated which can be intimidating for a young girl interested in getting into it so Girl Geek Academy will be running girl-only classes for the budding gamer keen on kicking some virtual butts.

If you haven’t heard about Overwatch then here’s the gist:

Overwatch is a multi-player and team-based game set in the future. Choosing one of a bunch of diverse hero characters, you team up with five other pals and battle it out against the opposing team. Each hero has their own special powers, abilities, and extremely well written story line. Be a soldier, scientist, or adventurer – the choice is yours.

As the game describes:

In a time of global crisis, an international task force of heroes banded together to restore peace to a war-torn world: OVERWATCH.

Overwatch ended the crisis, and helped maintain peace in the decades that followed, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery. But, after many years, Overwatch’s influence waned, and it was eventually disbanded.

Now, conflict is rising across the world again, and the call has gone out to heroes old and new. Are you with us?

Are you?

The gaming workshop will also introduce young girls into the world of eSports via Overwatch.

There’s absolutely no pressure on being good at the game either, it’s just about having fun.

According to the workshop details young punters will also learn:

  • What in-games roles you’re suited to.
  • How to communicate with your team, what are the ways to make sure your team are successful.
  • Critically think about game design and theorise strategies for game play.

PCs and the game are already provided by the academy, the only thing required is a packed lunch. So if you’re interested, you can learn more about the event and book your tickets, HERE.

It’s probably worth mentioning the event’s totally FREEEEE.

You can check out the original game trailer, below:

Tracer, is undoubtedly the mascot hero for Overwatch. Apart from being a dasher, she’s also the game’s first openly queer character.

Blizzard Entertainment also brought you World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Hearthstone.

Find out more about Overwatch, HERE.

P.S Girl Geek Academy are thinking about making an adult session too, so stay tuned.
