We are but three episodes away from the end of HBO‘s Game of Thrones so to soften the blow, A Song of Ice and Fire mastermind George R.R. Martin has gifted fans with an update on its successor shows.

In a post on his Not A Blog website, the author said three spinoffs are “still moving forward nicely.”
“We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term ‘spinoffs’) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely,” he wrote.
The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of FIRE & BLOOD and come up with your own theories.

Fire & Blood is set 300 years before A Game of Thrones, when dragons ruled Westeros. It focuses on the history of the Targaryen family and begins with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne.
Last June, one of the prequel series received a pilot order at HBO, written by Jane Goldman (the Kingsman franchise) and Martin. Details are thin but a logline from the network teased: “Only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.” The show is set thousands of years before the events of GoT.
The series’ cast is led by Naomi Watts (The Impossible, King Kong), who joins Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Denise Gough (Colette), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Mortal Instruments), Ivanno Jeremiah (Black Mirror), Sheila Atim (Harlots), Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia), Alex Sharp (To the Bone), and Toby Regbo (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald).
In April, Bryan Cogman‘s prequel show was unfortunately axed by HBO. The veteran GoT writer confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter, sharing the network had chosen to go in a different direction. Cogman also penned a deal with Amazon last year.
“I was developing one of the successor shows with George,” Cogman said at the time. “George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen.”
