George R.R. Martin Alludes To Possible ‘Game of Thrones’ Movies

Bad Santa George R.R. Martin has alluded to the possibility that one or more Game of Thrones feature films are in the early stages of discussion as a way to deliver both a fittingly epic end and a prologue to the series that launched a thousand trailers
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the New York premiere of the show’s imminent fourth season overnight, Martin intimated that, considering the Song of Ice and Fire books are progressively expanding in their scope, their screen adaptations need to follow suit:

“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger [in scope]. It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

Martin continued that a separate adaptation of the three Tales of Dunk and Egg prequel novellas is another possibility being considered: “They could be the basis for [a film]. I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more.” Both are viable options with a precedent set by HBO’s collaboration with Warner Bros. on feature length adaptations of Sex and The City and Entourage alike; Warner Bros. too is no stranger to wrangling dragons, having also been responsible for the Hobbit prequels.
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss last week told Vanity Fair that they also envision the television series ending in 2017 or 2018, and that they’re alarmingly close to catching up with the novels – the remaining two of which remain unpublished.
The fourth season of GoT returns to US small screens on April 6th, 9pm on HBO and airs a few hours later on Foxtel’s Showcase channel on Monday April 7th.
Two weeks, two days, eighteen hours.
