Game Of Thrones final season has been quite controversial – maybe it’s because the series has moved beyond the plot lines from George R.R. Martin’s books, or because over the years, the internet has grown more vocal about their opinions. Whatever the case, every episode seems to generate Tweet after thinkpiece after Instagram outrage (we are not immune to this, hehe).

While much of the controversy is just fun and games about plots that don’t make sense or character arcs people disagree with, some of it is more serious. Like the conversation around Sansa Stark‘s “little bird” comment to The Hound, in which she said her experiences with Littlefinger‘s manipulation and Ramsay Bolton‘s horrific rape and mistreatment made her who she is today – without them, she would still be a “little bird”.
One person who spoke out about the line was Jessica Chastain.
Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger. A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly. The #littlebird was always a Phoenix. Her prevailing strength is solely because of her. And her alone.#GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/TVIyt8LYxI

Another sore point from the episode was the way in which Missandei died – in chains, and simply to bait her best friend, Daenerys. Ava DuVernay had something to say about this, critiquing the demise of the only black woman in the series..
So… the one and only sister on the whole epic, years-long series? That’s what you wanna do? Okay. #GOT pic.twitter.com/O5G6YZMj0g

There’s only two episodes left in the final season, with the next likely to focus on the downfall of Cersei Lannister.
