Capping off a wild weekend for the network, in which they ridiculously decided to cancel Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which was then swiftly picked back up by NBC, leading thousands of fans across the globe to cry out in unison “LOL, FOX,” the US FOX Network has today given the voraciously beloved but often inexplicable Gotham the green light for one last season.
Gotham, which follows the pre-Batman days of Gotham City and all its incredibly bizarre inhabitants, is in the final throes of season four as we speak, with a season finale set to air later this week.
But FOX bosses are not mucking around in ensuring their beloved DC drama returns to the air for a final stint at the wheel.
The series is now confirmed for a fifth, and final, season, with all evidence pointing towards the final handful of episodes being the ones that get to the proverbial fireworks factory at long last; rumour suggests that the last season will deal primarily with the burgeoning Bruce Wayne‘s transition into Batman.

What’s interesting is that the reported series order calls for 13 episodes to be made and delivered, which represents the exact amount the show needs to get to 100 overall episodes, at which point studio heads can sell the show off on a very lucrative syndication deal in the US.
The move to renew Gotham keeps FOX’s “new” direction largely in line, with the network placing greater weight on a raft of lightweight scripted dramas such as Lethal Weapon, Empire, Star, and The Orville.
And, at the end of the day, it keeps Ben McKenzie gainfully employed in a place that’s far, far away from Newport Beach.
That place is no good for you, Ryan. You might think it is, and it changed your life, but maybe not for the better.
