Forget The Oscars: Nick Kroll & John Mulaney *Killed* At The Spirit Awards

We’d like to imagine tomorrow’s Academy Awards host Jimmy Kimmel is currently pacing around his swish hotel room and muttering obscenities to himself.
At least, that’d make sense, considering the perfection that was Nick Kroll and John Mulaney’s opening monologue at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

The long-standing comedy partnership was enlisted to host indie film’s “biggest afternoon,” and took the opportunity to riff on a slew of Spirit Award and Oscar contenders – including Moonlight, Manchester By The Sea, and 13th.
On the decidedly dour content of many of the films represented at the awards, Kroll said “these movies were so harsh, I had to watch A Dog’s Purpose to cheer up, and I mean the behind-the-scenes footage.

A no-show from Samuel L. Jackson didn’t stop Mulaney from delivering perhaps the most oddly-specific burn of all time. Oddly enough, nearly the exact same thing could be said about their take on the equally-absent Shia LaBeouf.

And the final quotes. Fuck.

Even James Corden – fresh from his turn as Grammys host – gushed over the performance:

Anyway, you should watch it for yourself, right now. It’ll give a reference point to which Kimmel’s efforts can be compared:
