Everything You Need To Know About The New Crop Of Feminists In The ‘First Wives Club’ Series

Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton did an incredible job of bringing feminism to the big screen with the iconic flick First Wives Club, but that was the ’90s.

Decades have passed, people are still leaving their spouses for younger partners and sadly, gender inequality is alive and well.

So now is as good a time as ever for a new generation of first wives to grace our screens, only this time its via Stan – because nothing screams millennial quite like hunkering down and bingeing every episode of a new series to get a sweet dose of girl power.

Now let’s meet our gals, shall we?

First, there’s Hazel (Jill Scott). A vibrant and stylish actress whose producer husband Derek (Malik Yoba) leaves her for an R&B artist.

In addition to being abandoned by her gaslighting husband, Hazel soon finds that her career opps are slipping away as a result of the split, plus her husband has commandeered their funds and booted her from the penthouse they bought together (ugh).

Next up we have Bree (Michelle Buteau), a flustered and overworked surgeon and mother whose stay-at-home husband (RonReaco Lee) cheated on her with another mum.

Her practical persona is a perfect contrast to Hazel’s diva attitude and her crass outspokenness balances well with the third friend’s meekness.

Speaking of the third friend, Ari (Ryan Michelle Bathe) is a former attorney who is married to a politician (Mark Tallman) with strange sexual habits.

Ari’s storyline is a particularly frustrating one as she gave up her booming legal career to support her husband’s political campaign, only to be betrayed by him.

The three friends join forces to hatch a devious but brilliant plan to get back at their exes and the twists and turns that it takes are v. entertaining.

But the series is more than just revenge comedy, it’s a celebration of feminism as it portrays women in various different forms.

You’ll notice that all three characters are vastly different, but what they have in common is their strength and their ability to persevere in the face of adversity.

All the ladies have their own skills and careers and despite being rattled by their respective husbands’ betrayals, they are still ultimately able to pick up the pieces and move on.

The series has already been renewed for a second season, which gives you an indication as to just how spicy and addictive it is.

Every episode of the brand new series First Wives Club has officially dropped, so grab the wine and head to Stan!
