First Trailer: Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’

I know it’s early but this just made my day. Soundtracked by Jay-Z and Kanye’sNo Church In The Wild‘ (which played a big part in the rehearsal process) and Jack White’s cover of U2‘s ‘Love Is Blindness‘, the first trailer for Luhrmann’sGatsby‘ is exactly what you’d expect from the antipodean auteur – it’s visually sumptuous, anachronistic crack – and depending on your feelings towards Luhrmann’s oeuvre then it should either make your day too or dash your hopes for a faithful retelling of Fitzgerald’s classic.

Glitter confetti, fireworks, “cool beautiful shirts” flying at you and Joel Edgerton’s cigar (FREUD ALERT) highlight a lot of what people are either going to love or hate about Luhrmann’s 3D take on the Roaring Twenties.Catherine Martin, (Luhrmann’s right-hand-wife and costume designer) has outdone herself again in the wardrobe department (with a little help from her friends). Detractors have so far pointed out that nothing looks real in the trailer and that the music doesn’t fit (to which I would say ‘Romeo + Juliet soundtrack‘), but a case could definitely be made that artifice, excess (and braggadocio) are entirely the point.

The Great Gatsby‘ stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Isla Fisher, Gemma Ward and Brendan Maclean and opens in 3D on December 25th.
