“Alice in Wonderland with machine guns” that’s how Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) describes his latest all guns blazin’ epic Sucker Punch, slated for release in March of next year. Let’s go down the rabbit hole shall we? Says the synopsis: “A young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility“. So basically we have abandonment, the evil oppression of a faceless institution and a Mighty Ducks training montage with guns instead of hockey sticks – all roads lead to revenge! Also, judging from the unashamedly epic trailer below the protagonist’s escape involves katanas, machine guns, dragons, mech warriors and dangerous levels of mascara. How much visual stimuli can you handle, human?
Fans of Snyder’s previous work will be familiar with the brooding, hyper-kinetic and (what’s another word for epic?) way he paints a scene and Aussie Emily Browning (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and the subject of the creepiest IMDB forum users ever) seems to carry the film and most of the action surprisingly well for one of such slight shoulders. Fellow Aussie Abbie Cornish also stars as does Mad Men’s
Don Draper Jon Hamm, Jena Malone and tween icon Vanessa Hudgens. Looks great but what else would you expect from the guy who’s responsible for THIS!
