A Film With A $10M Budget Is Now The Best Rated Flick Ever On Rotten Tomatoes

The Rotten Tomatoes list of films that carry a 100% approval rating is chock full of flicks that have all attained what the website deems to be “universal acclaim,” and features a whole host of flicks that have been critically adored across the board. It’s not necessarily a definitive list of the best films of all time – you’ll always find some dingus contrarian critic willing to go in on The Godfather just for something to do – but it is a good list of films that critics have loved whole-heartedly; films that no one can find bad things to say about.

The more reviews the flick gets, the harder it is to maintain that 100% rating because (quite obviously) the likelihood of a negative review appearing becomes greater.

With 163 universally positive reviews, Toy Story 2 has held the top spot on the highest rated Rotten Tomatoes list for a hell of a long time. But its long reign is over thanks to an indie bolter that was made on the smell of an oily rag.

Lady Bird, which carried a relatively paltry production budget of just US$10million, has usurped Toy Story 2 as the highest rated flick on the Rotten Tomatoes 100% list.

After taking both the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals by storm, the film has amassed a whopping 170 universally glowing reviews, putting it in top spot on the Rotten Tomatoes list.

Written and directed by the freakin’ wonderful Greta GerwigLady Bird sports a bumper an burgeoning cast featuring Saoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsTimothée Chalamet, and more.

Gerwig’s script and direction, along with Ronan and Metcalf’s performances, are particularly being praised by critics, with buzz around the film building steadily heading into awards season.

Unfortunately for Australian audiences, we’ve still got a tiny little wait to go until we can wrap our eyes onto it; Lady Bird isn’t due for release out here until February 15th.

And again, the ole’ Tomatometer is by no means a faultless truth. But a little-film-that-could being able to knock off Toy Story 2 from a perch its been sitting on for 18 years is still pretty dang cool.
