Ewan McGregor Spills On How He Transformed His Bod For ‘Fargo’ Season 3

If you’re across the Fargo season three trailer, you’ll probably have seen that Ewan McGregor is basically unrecognisable, playing two brothers. If you’re not across it, sort that out immediately:

One of the brothers, Ray Stussy, is quite a bit heavier than the other. McGregor had just gotten mildly shredded for Trainspotting 2, and all of a sudden Fargo creator and showrunner Noah Hawley said he needed to put on a stack of weight. Well, McGregor – who said he was at his absolute fittest at this point – did.
I ordered a massive dessert and started putting on weight from that second onward. From October until January, when we started filming, I just started eating whatever I wanted. I made sure that I had carbs with everything and French fries with everything. I didn’t have any technique other than eating a lot. I think if you spoke to a dietician, I probably did it all wrong.

Why couldn’t he just wear a fat suit, like a normal person in this situation? Well, apparently that wasn’t really an option. There’s a bit in the script where McGregor’s character has to lift himself out of a bath and you’ve gotta see his bod.

“You see my naked body. Although I wear some padding for Ray to make him heavier, this scene had to justify that padding,” he explained to Vulture. “It wouldn’t make sense for me to wear padding and not be fat when I got out of the bath. So when I got out of the bath, I was properly overweight for me.”
Then how does he play Emmitt, the slimmer brother? He wore a compression suit. “It’s a really unbelievably effective compressing T-shirt that I have help getting into and help getting out of, and it makes Emmit less heavy-looking,” he says.
There you go.
