Josh Thomas’ Everything’s Gonna Be Okay Is Back For S2 In April & My Tear Ducts Need Prep Time

Josh Thomas and Kayla Cromer in Everything's Gonna Be Okay

Josh ThomasEverything’s Gonna Be Okay returns to Stan on April 9 for season two, if you’re looking to become far too attached to another set of fictional characters.

Like its predecessor, the much-loved Please Like Me, the heartwarming family comedy-drama stars Josh Thomas. This time as Nicholas, a 20-something American-Australian who moves to Los Angeles to act as the guardian to his two half-sisters after their father dies.

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay has been praised for its representation of differently abled people, featuring Kayla Cromer, an autistic woman, as Nicholas’ 17-year-old sister, Matilda, who is preparing to graduate high school.

Season one left off with Genevieve (Maeve Press), 15, trying out live storytelling for the first time in New York City, while Matilda reconsidered whether she’s ready to leave home to pursue her musical ambitions at Juilliard. Meanwhile, Nicholas was just starting to imagine what his life in LA would be like without needing to care for his middle sister.

Season two will premiere on the same day as the US on Stan with a double episode, with new episodes dropping weekly. In the new season, we can expect to see Matilda rethink what she wants from her life, Genevieve start to date, and Nicholas balancing sorta-parenthood-ish with his blossoming relationship with Alex (Adam Faison) and his career as an entomologist (he studies bugs).

We’ve also been promised “new eccentric friends, unexpected hookups and a lot more bugs”. Delightful.

That includes some pretty massive cast announcements, including comedy legends Maria Bamford and Richard Kind starring as the parents of Matilda’s friend Drea (Lillian Carrier). Lillian is also an autism consultant on the show.

At the end of January, Josh Thomas celebrated the end of filming for season two on Instagram.

“We wrapped season 2 of #everythingsgonnabeokay today! I was given this hat and the flowers, the coat is everyday wear,” he wrote in the caption.

“I’m so grateful for our crew who were incredibly smart and decent, who worked so hard to keep everyone safe and healthy and laughed and danced with me even though the circumstances were fucking weirddddddd. I can’t wait until one day when I can maybe see the rest of their face. Kisses!”

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay was renewed in May 2020. Thomas Ward, who co-starred and collaborated with Josh Thomas as a writer on Please Like Me, joins season two as both a writer and executive producer.

We’re excited to see how Josh Thomas expands the show for season two, a show which, at its worst catered too heavily to an imagined US audience; but at its best was a searingly real and grimly funny depiction of grief and puberty.
