Even Lucas Bravo, The Hot Chef On Emily In Paris, Has Sided With The Show’s Brutal Critics

Your new fave Netflix show Emily In Paris copped solid reviews in the U.S. and here in Australia, but the French weren’t so fond of the series.

When Netflix first released the trailer, culture magazine Les Inrockuptibles slammed both the show and its creator Darren Star for seemingly finding inspiration from Moulin Rouge, baguettes, and Ratatouille.

And then the reviews came out and they were even harsher, with Premiere, via The Hollywood Reporter, taking issue with the show’s offensive portrayal of Paris.

“In Emily in Paris, we learn that the French are ‘all bad’ (si, si), that they are lazy and never arrive at the office before the end of the morning, that they are flirtatious and not really attached to the concept of loyalty, that they are sexist and backward, and of course, that they have a questionable relationship with showering. Yes, no cliché is spared, not even the weakest.”

Now, your imaginary French boyfriend Lucas Bravo (the bloke who plays hot chef and neighbour Gabriel) has said he actually reckons the French reviewers have a point in their criticism of Emily In Paris.

“I think they’re right, in a way,” he told Cosmopolitan. “We’re portraying cliches and we’re portraying one single vision of Paris. Paris is one of the most diverse cities in the world. We have so many ways of thinking, so many different nationalities, so many different neighbourhoods. A lifetime wouldn’t be enough to know everything that’s going on in Paris. It’s an entire world in a city.”

He advised, “At some point, if you want to tell a story about Paris, you have to choose an angle. You have to choose a vision. French critics, they didn’t understand the fact that it’s just one vision. They’re like, ‘Oh, this is not what Paris is.’ Of course. Paris is many things.”

With that said, he reckons Emily In Paris is a fabulous form of escapism during these trying times.

“People want to travel. Reality is so rough these days, and we’ve been going through such a difficult time that I think the show is so lighthearted, it’s so colourful, the fashion, the romance, the traveling,” he said.

“Darren Star’s vision is so colourful and alive and funny. People needed something to just escape.”

Last week, we did a deep dive into the star’s Instagram, which went from having 12,000 followers to almost 400,000 in less than a week and is now at more than 571,000.

Have a peek at said deep dive here (you won’t regret it, I promise).
