‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Elisabeth Moss Talks Scientology In Insta Comments

The star of ‘Mad Men‘ and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ that everyone likes so much that we collectively forgive her average-to-poor Aussie accent in ‘Top of the Lake‘, Elisabeth Moss, has jumped to the defence of Scientology in the comments to one of her latest posts on Instagram.

Like Laura Prepon of ‘Orange Is the New Black‘ and Beck, Moss is a Scientologist – in fact she was raised as one – although she who very rarely publicly comments on the controversial religion/cult. She’s been known to answer questions on the matter by calling that part of her life “private“.

A ‘grammer known only as @moelybanks wrote to the star earlier this week in the comments to a recent pic of Moss at an Emmy For Your Consideration event for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘. The pic has scored over 34,000 likes and 629 comments.

In her question, which grabbed 31 likes, she drew parallels between the totalitarian Christian theonomic government Gilead of the series and the religion whose actual doctrine – written by a sci-fi writer – includes aliens.

She wrote:

Love this adaptation so much. Question though, does it make you think twice about Scientology? Gilead and Scientology both believe that all outside sources (aka news) are wrong and evil… It’s just very interesting.”

To which Moss responded reasonably diplomatically, although didn’t actually reveal much:

That’s actually not true at all about Scientology. Religious freedom and tolerance and understanding and truth and equal rights for every race, religion and creed are extremely important to me. The most important things to me probably. And so Gilead and THT hit me on a very personal level. Thanks for the interesting question!!

The OG commenter thanked Moss for “taking the time to try and explain a little“.

Still, Moss’ comments didn’t stop a full on conversation on scientology’s virtues and vices coming out in the comments earlier today.

Moss also @ed a few fans in the comments to thank them for their kind words, and answered a coupla questions, talking about her passion for acting and her process, and her makeup regime. In one of her thank yous, she wrote: “We girls gotta stick together!!
