Disney Says ‘The Lion King’ Won’t Be An Exact Remake Of The Original

Disney‘s film production chief, Sean Bailey, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about some of the flicks currently in the works with the company, one of which is the upcoming remake of The Lion King. Not only does Bailey confirm that it won’t be a shot-for-shot remake of the original, but he also says it uses both animation and live action techniques.

“The Lion King is a revered and beloved movie, so you’d better revere and love those parts that the audience wants,” he told THR. “But there are things in the movie that are going to be new.”

In other words, all the bits you wanna see will be there, but so will a bunch of new stuff. Of course, no one knows exactly what Disney will add to the classic film, but I’d wager they’d be treading very lightly given the popularity of the original. Could you imagine the backlash if they went and fucked it up? Forgeddabowdit.

When the trailer first hit, there was a bit of confusion around whether it was live action or computer generated. While CGI obviously plays a huge role in the film, Bailey actually blurs the lines even more with his answer to the question, calling it a “new form of filmmaking”.

“Historical definitions don’t work. It uses some techniques that would traditionally be called animation, and other techniques that would traditionally be called live action. It is an evolution of the technology Jon used in Jungle Book.”

You can have another look at the trailer below.

I mean, you can definitely pick out the animated bits, but I’m not entirely sure which parts are live action. It’s impressive as fuck either way.

The Lion King is due for release in July 2019.
