Disney Confirms ‘Star Wars’ Spin-off Movies Will Be Origin Stories

A long time ago, in a corporate boardroom far far away…

Since buying the Star Wars franchise late last year, Disney have announced that they’ll be releasing a new film every year from 2015, because original ideas are boring and no one wants to ever see anything new, ever. Some will be the continuation of the main story, ie. the JJ Abrams-directed Episode VII scheduled for 2015, to be followed by VIII in 2017and IX in 2019, but in between these there will “spin-off” movies, confirmed by Disney’s Chief Financial Officer (because that’s who makes decisions about movies these days) to be “origin stories” for some of the saga’s most loved secondary characters. You know, the ones who tend to be monumentally more interesting (and much, much cooler) than Luke, Leia and the gay robot.

Rumours have spread far and wide across the galaxy about who, exactly. the films will focus on. One option of the table is Boba Fett – we’d love to see how the Fett-man came to be, as Darth Vader put it, “the best bounty hunter in the galaxy”. And of course, intergalactic smuggler Han Solo must have had plenty of roguish, handsome, rough-around-edges-loner-with-a-heart-of-gold-type adventures before he was hired as a chauffeur in Episode IV: A New Hope. But for our money, it’s most likely that Yoda will be the first to get his own film. With 750 years of history to cover before we first meet him in The Empire Strikes Back, though, it could be a long one.

As long as it’s not Jar Jar Fucking Binks.
